Up to now, I'm not an expert in this field, and I installed almost every fortran package that I saw: g77-3.4, gfortran, libg2c0, libgfortran2

  • $ sudo apt-get install gfortran gfortran.doc gfortran.doc gfortran-4.3 gfortran-4.3-doc libgfortran3 libblas3gf gdb

Desktop panels

For an easier access to some applications, I suggest you to add some panels to pagin desktop. export https_proxy=http://yourproxyurl:yourportnumber

export ftp_proxy=http://yourproxyurl:yourportnumber

Adding Repositories

For letting your system to install some useful applications, you have to add some extra repositories to your /etc/apt/sources.list file, adding some lines to pagina file, with the command:

  • $ sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

If you check this out n know the name of some of the openovfice applications, for sure you don't need to install it.

Check for Broken Packages

If you have only follow what I presented you on this document, you shouldn't have any broken package. But, just to be sure, please configuracion the following:

  1. Click 'System'-->Administration'-->'Synaptic Package Manager'.

  2. Click the 'Custom Filters' button, close to the bottom left of your screen.

  3. Looking straight up, find the word 'Broken', in the left column above, and click on it.

  4. If any packages appear in the right-hand pane, those are 'broken' packages. You should be able to right-click on those and click 'mark for re-installation'.

  5. Click the 'Apply' button on your top panel (the third icon from the right), and click 'apply' again in the 'summary' window that will pop up, to confirm.

Also, this command can helps you:

  • $ sudo dpkg --configure -a

Update your repositories

For all the changes take place, you need to update your repositories. If everything is OK, when you execute the following command, for updating, you won't have any problems:

KDE base

Even if you are planning to use Gnome as your windows manager (as me), I suggest you to install some basic KDE packages, because it will increase the amount of available software that you will be able to install in the future. In my case: K3b, K9copy

  • sudo apt-get install k3b k9copy

Basic Restricted Formats (MP3.)

Ubuntu strives to make all software that meets the licensing terms in the Ubuntu License Policy available. However patent and copyright restrictions complicate free operating systems distributing software to support proprietary configuracion. dailymotion lip to liner how er apply commitment to only include completely free software by default means that proprietary media formats are not configured 'out of the box'.

Ubuntu can play the most popular non-free media formats, including DVD, MP3, Quicktime, Windows Media, and more by following the instructions below. If this seems like unnecessary work, remember that Ubuntu is a distribution of free software and these packages are (at least arguably) affected by patents and license restrictions in some countries. Avoid formats suppressed by DRM (Digital Rights Management, or Digital Restrictions Management), as they are often unplayable.

  1. Using Synaptic, go to ApplicationsAdd/Remove.

  2. Set Show: to All available applications

  3. Search for ubuntu-restricted-extras and install it. Note that there is also xubuntu-restricted-extras and kubuntu-restricted-extras.

A detailed list of all packages that are installed is:

About Player Engines

Playing Encrypted DVDs (with Mediubuntu repository)

To play encrypted DVDs, the writer package is essential. libdvdcss is a simple library designed for accessing DVDs like a block device without having to bother about the decryption. Addtional information about this package can be found at http://www.videolan.org/developers/libdvdcss.html.

If you have added the entire Medibuntu repository, you just need to install the package using APT:

  • sudo apt-get install libdvdcss2

About DVD ripping

Additional Non-Native Media Formats (with Mediubuntu repository)

There are a few formats such as certain Windows formats, Real, and Apple Quicktime which do not have native codecs under Linux. To work around this issue, external binary codecs are used instead to play these formats. MPlayer and xine use such external codecs and these codecs are stored in the MPlayer website in their codecs directory located at http://www.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/releases/codecs/.

Medibuntu distributes a package which contains these codecs. The codecs are under the non-free component of the repository. If you followed the directions above to exclude the non-free component, follow the steps again to add the Medibuntu repository to your system's list of APT repositories and skip the step to exclude the non-free component.

If you have added the entire Medibuntu repository, for i386, the package is called w32codecs:

  • $ sudo apt-get install w32codecs

Optional step : remove the non-free component

Some people don't want to install pity, sternhoff 2016 able yearly calendar idea software on their computer as explained in the "Free and Non-Free components" section. We will explain how to exclude getting packages from the non-free component of the Medibuntu repository.

You should understand that if you remove the non-free component, you will NOT have access to these packages:

  • Acroread (Acrobat Https://roaden.click/role-playing/wifislax-4111-vmware-edition.php -- not really needed because you can use free software, such as Evince, to read pdfs)

  • GoogleEarth

  • Opera web browser (not really needed because you can use free software: there are several free browsers available)

  • Restricted video codecs (ppc-codecs, w32codecs, w64codecs)

  • Realplay (Real Player)

  • Skype

The complete list of packages is here.

To exclude getting packages from the non-free component of the Medibuntu repository, type the following command:

  • $ sudo sed -e 's/ non-free//' -i /etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list

Unfortunately, I still depend on Skype, Acroread and some proprietary codecs.
