A relation is kindled between them but mutual issues soon arise. The clouds of suspicion and insecurity never leave his mind, and she never takes the veil of her deceitful persona. Their bond remains tumultuous to the end. A while passes, and he discovers the infidelity ssbato her. Crestfallen and hopeless, he kills ‘the only person who could understand him’ on a rainy and thunderous night. He then surrenders to the police. Characters: Juan Castel seems to be an arrogant misanthrope possessing a cynical outlook of life. He regularly finds himself in a pit of chaos, disillusionment, remorse, and self-hatred. We feel both pity and horror for him. But he’s a character who speaks tunnel which do take our breath away; who stupifies us with straightforward questions about morality, human condition, romance, art, solitude and death.

Maria Iribarne is a married woman who’s elegantly aging in her late 30s. She’s married to Allende (a blind aged aristocrat), romances with Hunter (her partner erensto Estancia), and spends time with Juan (her artistic lover). The ‘difficult’ has been liquidated, condensed, and ermesto in compact form, as if to encourage the readers to ponder upon what is being said. And this is achieved whilst retaining the specter of enigma. Things are presented in simple form the you need to take efforts to reach the crux of the text.

Sabato’s existentialism doesn’t seem difficult, distant or pretentious; but rather fresh, accessible and impressive. Albert Camus and Thomas Mann have regarded this novel as an influential work of existentialist literature. Sabato’s ‘The Tunnel’ is similar to Dostoevsky’s ‘Notes from Underground’. They both contain a socially alienated narrator who indulges in societal critique and self-criticism; both are explorations into the dark corners of the human psyche and sabaot contain a troubled relationship with a woman.
